According to a study led by Australian researchers, certain exercises can put pressure on the developing feet of overweight children. Due to their tendency to have fatter and flatter feet, overweight children are at risk for increased pressure on the arch—leading to foot pain and discomfort. This could ultimately cause kids to avoid participating in physical activity, which is crucial to health and well-being. Other forms of activity, such as swimming or cycling, may be a necessary alternative for overweight children uncomfortable with exercising. In a previous study, Diane L. Riddiford-Harland of the University of Wollongong and her coauthors found that overweight kids had higher “plantar pressures” while walking than normal-weight kids. The study also linked the higher pressures and flattening of the arches to a possibility that the kids would be less physically active.
Obesity can be particularly problematic for the feet. If you are overweight and have concerns regarding your feet, speak to one of our podiatrists of Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Our doctors will provide you with quality podiatric care.
Obesity and your Feet
Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.
Problems & Complications
Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.
Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.
Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

Information fromEngland’s NHS indicates a disturbingly alarming trend in the rare of unneeded amputations among the country’s diabetic population. Medical practitioners have been urging hospitals and NHS (National Health Services) commissioners to come up with a national standard. This standard will serve to indicate to physicians when amputations are necessary.
Diabetes UK referred to the current trends in circulatory medical care as “unacceptable.” "Too many patients aren't getting the treatment they need to avoid losing their legs,” said Neil Carmichael, Conservative MP for Stroud. “The figures for parts of the south-west of England are particularly alarming, and this needs to be tackled.”
Many conditions of the foot and ankle are a result of circulation problems. If you suffer from poor circulation in the feet, consult podiatrist Dr. Michael Stein of Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Dr. Stein can diagnose and treat your foot and ankle conditions accordingly.

Dylan McCabe, a sixth-grader of the Creekside Christian Academy incurred an injury on Dec. 20, in the beginning of Christmas break when a large frame fell from a wall and landed directly on his left foot. One month later Tammy McCabe, Dylan’s mother pondered why her son’s left foot was still swollen when the cast was removed. Massages, long walks, and even heating pads were used to mitigate the issue, but nothing worked.
Until, another trip was made to the orthopedist; X-rays revealed Dylan was suffering from a rare form of cancer: osteosarcoma. The bone cancer was found on his right leg, a tumor measuring 14 inches in length right between his hipbone and knee. “It was a blessing that he broke his foot, because we wouldn’t have known otherwise.”
Sometimes, a broken foot might be a blessing in disguise like the story above. This means seeing a podiatrist like Dr. Michael A. Stein, DPM of Foot Doctor of the East Bay should be a priority. Dr. Stein can provide all the assistance required in treating a broken foot.
Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot ‘breaking’, or fracturing. Bones typically break when the bone is bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.
Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:
· Bruising
· Pain
· Redness
· Swelling
· Blue (foot)
· Numbness
· Cold
· Misshapen
· Cuts
·Deformities
Those who are experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect that they have a broken foot, should seek medical attention in a center where x-rays can be performed. This is especially urgent if any of the symptoms include numbness, blue coloring, cold feet, cuts, misshapen toes or deformities as these indicate more severe cases.

Research has shown that pregnant women taking the time to relax and not be on their feet too much can actually cause flat feet problems and changes in feet size.
According to theAmerican Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation published in Iowa, when women are pregnant and not on their feet as much, the size of their feet become bigger and in some unusual cases do not revert back to their original size after the birth of their child.
The research stated that the prolonged carrying of all the extra pounds presses on the arches and spreads the bones of the feet. In the completed research 34 of the subjects were found to have wider and longer feet due to extra hormones that occur during pregnancy. Fortunately, the research has shown that the changes in a woman’s feet usually occur only with their first child and not with another.
If you believe you suffer from foot problems as a result of swollen feet from pregnancy, it is best to seek a podiatrist like Dr. Michael Stein of Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Dr. Stein will evaluate your condition and provide appropriate treatment options for your feet.
What foot problems arise during pregnancy?
One problem that can occur is over-pronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward. This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.
Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy, but tends to occur in the later stages.
How to keep feet healthy during pregnancy?
· Orthotics can provide extra support for your feet and helps to evenly distribute weight
· Try not to walk barefoot whenever possible
· Wear shoes with good arch support and allow good circulation
· Elevate feet if you experience swelling
· Massage your feet
· Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
If you have any questions, please contact one of our offices which are located in San Leandro, Pleasanton and Los Gatos, CA. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Michelle Schneider and Dave Dunn work while walking on a treadmill at Evolent, a health-care startup in Arlington, Virginia. Researchers are searching to combine both physical activity and working, trying to see if the combination could allow more people to burn off glucose that accumulates in the blood stream.
Michael Jensen, a researcher at Mayo Clinic is on the phone and on a treadmill at the same time. Meanwhile, Australian researcher David Dunstan uses a speakerphone to increase his mobility in his office. Both are trying to find the link between idleness and premature death. Based on their findings, both researchers have remained on their feet for most of their day.
Jensen explains that he and his colleagues at Mayo, in Rochester, Minn., were studying weight control when they discovered that some people "spontaneously start moving round and don't gain weight" when they have overeaten. "This really got us thinking about this urge to move," Jensen says, "and how important that might be for maintaining good health."
Your feet are just as important to the rest of your body. If you think you may have sustained a foot injury or developed a foot illness due to weight you should seek out the care of a podiatrist like Dr. Michael Stein of Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Dr. Stein can diagnose your condition as well as provide you with treatment options that work for you.
