Why do my feet swell during pregnancy?

We're excited that you're an expecting mother! You're glowing, radiant, and your belly’s swelling with a sense of enchantment, but we can bet that isn't the only thing swelling these days. During pregnancy, your feet and ankles often become swollen, a condition we call edema.

To nurture both you and your baby, your bodily fluids increase and accumulate in your tissues. Due to this increase, and the fact that your growing uterus begins to place pressure on the veins that return blood from your lower limbs to your heart, you experience swollen feet during pregnancy.  Other reasons for large feet include quick weight gain or the hormone relaxin, which allows your bones to spread out.

Mild swelling of the feet and ankles is normal. You can ease your discomfort by avoiding long periods of standing or sitting still. Elevate your legs while at rest, and sleep on your side. It's smart to avoid elastic-top socks and wear comfortable shoes, too. If you have concerns, contact Foot Doctor of the East Bay in San Leandro, CA. Call us at (510) 483-3390 to schedule an appointment today, or visit us at our Pleasanton or Los Gatos, CA locations.
