Nail Polish Sunshine, summer, sand, and salons—are you thinking what we're thinking? Summer is well on its way, and that means barefoot trips to the beach, which suggests a trip to the nail salon. Well, here’s the inside scoop on safe pedicure tips for avoiding fungal nails this summer. Follow these suggestions and spend your sunny days cheery and fungus-free.

We understand that having beautiful nails is less a matter of luck and more a matter of properly caring for them. While most nail salons follow strict cleanliness and disinfection guidelines, it's good to ask yourself some questions. Is your nail technician certified? Is the station clean? Do you see dirty tools laying around? Does your technician wash his or her hands between clients?  Salons can often harbor many types of fungi. For that reason, don't shave your legs for 24 hours before your appointment. A nick from shaving will make your skin susceptible to infection. In addition, never let your pedicurist shave away your calluses. It's best to smooth them yourself with a pumice stone.

It is not wise to share nail clippers and files with others either. Go ahead and bring your own to your appointment, but be sure to sanitize them after each use with soap and water, then soak for 10 minutes in a disinfectant solution or rubbing alcohol.

Get your feet buffed and polished without the nagging worry of acquiring fungal nails. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the state of your toenails, contact Dr. Michael Stein. You can reach our offices in San Leandro, Pleasanton, and Los Gatos, CA by calling (510) 483-3390. You can also schedule your appointment online.  Here's to a beautiful summer!
