Alana Rodriguez is like many of the other girls who have competed at the Disney Cup International soccer tournament at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex. At 14-years-old, the sport is clearly her favorite. Unlike many other girls, however, Alana was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis before she was one-year-old. “She was only nine months old when they told me that she was, had this disease,” said Alana’s mother Diana Toledo, “and that it was incurable, …. and she wouldn’t be able to walk.” Going against doctors’ suggestions, Alana joined a team and began playing soccer. “I know soccer helped her develop to what she is now,” said Toledo. “She’s 5 foot 2, she looks perfectly healthy, she runs, she plays.”

Understanding where RA starts will help treat and prevent the condition. If you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Severe pain and immobility are caused by an inflammation of the lining of your joints, and in worse cases the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone can occur.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, many cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area. Pain will often initially present in the toes before the condition worsens and spreads throughout the entire foot.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of the feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that your podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor may ask you about your medical history and lifestyle to help determine possible causes of your RA.

Treatment

Unfortunately, there is no cure for RA, so treatment options are designed to specifically target the symptoms of it, most notably the pain it causes. Two types of anti-inflammatory drugs – non-steroidal or NSAIDs and corticosteroids – may be prescribed by your doctor. In some severe cases where the joints are too badly damaged, surgery may be an option. As always, speak with your podiatrist to help determine the appropriate treatment options available to you.

Running with Arthritic ConditionsAlthough she lives with Rheumatoid arthritis, 32 year old Mary Kaufman manages to maintain an active lifestyle. Kaufman, who has had RA since she was twelve, takes a type of protein created in a lab specifically for people with immune system problems known as biologics. Kaufman has taken biologics for over ten years.

Despite her RA, Kaufman has started running in local 5k races. Kaufman was able to complete two races within the past year and hopes to complete at least three more by the end of this year. However, keep in mind Kaufman’s RA does make her vulnerable to stress fractures in her feet, meaning she must train carefully.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area. Pain often initially presents in the toes before the condition worsens and spreads throughout the entire foot. Rheumatoid arthritis appears to be genetically inherited, so if you have a family history of RA, you may be predisposed to suffer from it as well.

  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

2.6.14_ToeWhisperer.jpgGary Williams is a special kind of foot doctor. He’s the guy models go to when the fashionable but uncomfortable shoes they often wear cause them to develop bunions, hammertoes, nerve conditions, and more. His skill has made his business extremely popular, and his clients often refer to him as “the Toe Whisperer.”

When working with a model, Williams will often try to get them to improve their everyday shoe-wearing habits like their posture and their pronation. He recommends exercises for them to do and may retrain them if they have a serious problem with walking. "I can make them function but if you try to look fashionable all the time, you will pay a price,” he said. “If you use your body badly, you will reap the problems that come with it over time."

Hammertoes are painful deformities that often result from excessive use of high heeled shoes. If you are dealing with foot pain and suspect that you have a hammertoe, contact podiatrist Dr. Michael A. Stein, DPM of Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Dr. Stein will diagnose your condition and present you with a wide array of possible treatment methods to choose from.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is little-known a painful condition that affects the second, third and fourth toes involving different joints of the toe and foot. Hammertoe can be caused by many other conditions such as RA (rheumatoid arthritis), osteoarthritis, trauma or injuries to your foot, it can be hereditary and it can also be caused by a cerebral vascular accident. If you wear shoes that are too narrow or short for your feet, it may exacerbate any pain you already have.

It is really important to your overall well-being to seek out medical attention at the first signs of foot pain or anything that may hinder your ability to walk in a normal manner. Taking care of your feet is one of the first steps to being able to live a full and healthy life.

A Chinese study published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases focused on an herb called “lei gong teng” or thunder god vine. This herb is said to provide treatment for rheumatoid arthritis more effectively than widely prescribed drug methotrexate. The study, consisting of 207 patients, had some patients given just the herb, others solely the drug, and others both the herb and the drug.

Those who were given just the herb had a fifty-five percent improvement rate on the ACR scale while those who were given both the herb and the drug achieved had an increased rate of seventy-seven percent. Those who were treated by just methotrexate were only to achieve just a 46 percent improvement rate. However, it should be known that the herb could have side effects as well, including gastrointestinal upsets and irregular menstruation.

Rheumatoid arthritis is not an easy condition to deal with.  If you have arthritis of the foot or ankle, see podiatrist Dr. Michael A. Stein, DPM of Foot Doctor of the East Bay. Dr. Stein can treat your foot and ankle needs.
